Paper Guidelines:

Object of the assignment:  To write a paper describing the contributions a scientist has made to the field of organic chemistry.  During the paper, you should discuss who you researched, what their discovery was, why it was important, and how your person and their research fits into the history of organic chemistry.  The focus of the paper should be on what the person discovered and why their discovery was important.  This paper should not include any biographical information; it should focus on their work.

Guidelines:    Your paper should consist of three parts:  an abstract, the main part of the paper, and a references page.  The paper must be at least 1200 words.  The abstract must be 250 words or less and single spaced.  The remainder of the paper must be double spaced.   References will be cited as end notes according to the rules found in the ACS Style Guide.  Online sources about how to reference can be found here.  (Please see me with questions about references).  NOTE:  the abstract and the reference page are NOT included in the 1200 word minimum for the paper.

Your references must include a minimum of one peer reviewed journal article.

An abstract is a brief summary of the paper.  It should include the most important points you are making in the paper and should NEVER be longer than 250 words.  It is acceptable for an abstract to be much shorter than 250 words.  Since the abstract is a summary, no information should ever be found only in the abstract.

A copy of ChemDraw will be placed on the computers in M230 for your use.  ChemDraw may be used to create any organic molecules needed for your paper.  If you have never used ChemDraw before, please set up an appointment with me to go over the program before you start typing your paper.

Submission:  You must submit both a hard (paper) copy AND an electronic copy of your paper.  The hard copy may be handed in to me in person, dropped off at my office, or placed in my mailbox in X-212.  The electronic copy must be submitted in the appropriate drop box in Cobra Learning, and must be formatted as a Web Page (.htm or .html) or as a Rich Text file (.rtf).
