Bibliography Guidelines:

Object of the assignment:  To hand in an annotated bibliography of the references you plan on using for your scientist's contributions paper.

Guidelines:  You will need to hand in a list of the references you plan to use.  Each reference must be formatted in the ACS style. Online sources about how to reference can be found here.  (Please see me with questions about references).  Electronic resources (web pages) should be cited using the following method:

Author, F.M. Title of Page, publication date, URL http://www.webpage (date accessed)

Journal articles, books, etc. that have a print (hard) copy are not considered to be electronic resources, and must be cited as the print version.  For journal articles, you must include the authors' names, the journal name (abbreviated), the year, the volume, and the page numbers.  For books, you must include the authors' names, the book title, the editor, the publisher, the place of publication and the year published.

In addition to simply giving your references, you must also include a short paragraph (200 words or less) below EACH reference, describing the main points of information to be found in the reference.  This is the "annotated" part of the bibliography.

You must include a minimum of five (5) references in your bibliography.  At least one must be from a peer-reviewed journal.  More details on acceptable references are given below.

NOTE:  You do not have to use all of the references you hand in when you write your paper.  Also, if you find references later that you would like to use in your paper, that is acceptable as well.  However, the references for the paper will follow the same guidelines (at least 1 reference must be a peer reviewed article).  Finally, if you have references that you have ordered using the Interlibrary Loan service that have not yet arrived, you should include them in your reference list, but note that they are on order.

Librarian Meeting:  In order to help you locate good references, you may set up a meeting with a librarian (in the Parkland Library).  If you do so, fill out the Librarian Meeting form (found here) and hand it in with your hard copy.

Submission:  You must submit both a hard (paper) copy AND an electronic copy of your bibliography.  The hard copy may be handed in to me in person, dropped off at my office, or placed in my mailbox in X-212.  The electronic copy must be submitted in the appropriate drop box in Cobra Learning, and must be formatted as a Web Page (.htm or .html) or as a Rich Text file (.rtf).

Grading Rubric:

Category Points
References (number, acceptable, correct information provided) 5
ACS style (formatting, information) 5
Annotations 10
Librarian Meeting 2 (E.C.)
Total 20

Any journal article or book incorrectly cited as an electronic resource will result in a loss of 2 points per article/book.

Acceptable References:

You must have a minimum of one reference that is an article from a peer reviewed journal.  The remaining references can be from any reputable source.

A letter to the editor, obituary, news update, etc. are not articles, and therefore will not counted as such.  Your article must be an original research article.  Peer reviewed journals are those in which the articles published in the journal were selected by fellow scientists (peers).  In general, most scientific journals found at the University of Illinois Library are peer reviewed.  Journals such as Chemical & Engineering News, Scientific American, Newsweek, and Time are all examples of journals that are NOT peer reviewed.  You may use articles from these journals, however they will not count as your peer reviewed journal article.  The Journal of Chemical Education, while peer reviewed, also does not count as an acceptable peer reviewed journal.

If you have any questions about whether a specific journal is acceptable, please contact me.
