Astronomy 102: Project Poster

The final part of your project is a poster submission for the Natural Sciences Poster Session. You must use tri-fold display board because it can stand up on its own. A white background will show your work better.

The posters will be displayed at the Natural Sciences poster session on the date listed on the calendar (Wednesday) from 4-6 P.M. You aren't required to attend the session, but if you attend the session and ask questions about posters presented by your classmates and from other classes, you will earn five extra credit points. If you attend the session and answer questions about your poster from attendees, you will earn ten extra credit points. You may bring it to Erik Johnson's office in L212 by 5 PM on the due date. No posters will be accepted after the poster session for partial credit.

The posters should be organized in eight general frames, which may be organized as you wish. There is a general guide below that includes all the required information. Don't forget a title!

Include the two Messier objects you've selected on the poster. Include a description of the object and the type along with the image. You may put them anywhere you want.

Top half of the left panel: Introduction to the project and the constellation.
Include information about the purpose of the project as well as general information about your constellation.

Bottom half of the left panel: Explanation of length of the year calculations.
Explain the method you used to determine the length of the year. Present your results, including the error as well as the causes of your error.

Upper left half of the center panel: Constellation drawing.
Present your constellation drawing. The image should have the axes labeled. Each star should be labeled with their names and their distances.

Upper right half of the center panel: Spatial relationship of stars.
Include a discussion of the appearance of these stars in the night sky as opposed to their true distances. Include a couple examples.

Discuss the positions of the Messier objects here as well.

Bottom left half of the center panel: Constellation mythology and citations.
Describe the mythology of your constellation. You are welcome to find the mythology of another culture instead.

Include the citations from your images, mythology, and Messier object information here.

Bottom right half of the center panel: Artwork of your constellation.
Include the image of the constellation you found in the previous part of the project. Provide a caption including the name of the source.

Top half of the right panel: The evolution of three stars.
Explain the evolution of three stars in your constellation. They should have unique fates and remaining lifetimes. Remember to check the example.

Bottom half of the right panel: Data table of all of your stars from part 3.
Include the names of the stars rather than the HIPPARCOS numbers.

You can find exemplary examples of posters here.
